Africa Mission Trip - June / July 2008

Many of you know that God planted a love in my heart and a call to minister to the peoples of Africa. It’s hard to believe that the time is finally arriving. It is difficult to explain how I feel, but I just know that my heart burns inside to be there and have the opportunity to love and minister to all those whom the world has forgotten. I want to share my God-given knowledge and skills of healing the brokenhearted with God’s children in Africa.  

I will be departing on Monday, June 16 for Uganda with a Show Mercy International team of 23. Show Mercy has three orphanages where I will be working with the children and staff as well as going into the villages to teach pastors and single moms during the three weeks that I am there.

I will then fly to Pemba, Mozambique via Nairobi, Kenya to work at the Iris Ministries compound which is located on the northeast coast. Iris Ministries has a Bible school for pastors, an orphanage with approximately 140 children and 16 Mozambican staff children.  In addition to a primary school (grades 1-5), there are 33 International Missionaries.

I will spend three weeks at the Pemba base ministering to the brokenhearted, both on the compound and out in the villages. Since this will be my first visit to Iris Ministries, part of my time will be spent in brainstorming and putting an action plan in place to meet all the long term goals for working with this ministry. I have outlined some of them below.

Current plans include:

1.       Facilitating the Grief Recovery (Life 101) program in individual and group classes for pastors, missionaries, staff, and children. 

2.       Providing educational classes for the staff members who are interested in learning these skills to help the children and families on a continuing basis. In addition to numerous other skills, these classes will teach them how to listen more effectively and help the children as they work through their pain.

3.       Visiting the classrooms and teaching the children about emotions and feelings, focusing on how to use them in a positive way.

4.       Going out into the villages to help other families and pastors.

5.       Any spare time will be spent playing with and loving on the children.

I realize that this is an ambitious schedule, but since travel to and within Africa is so expensive, I want to accomplish as much as possible.  Many of you have been faithful partners through your prayers and financial support over the past ten years. We are very thankful for your commitment. As we move into taking God’s message of love and healing to those who are hurting in central and southern Africa, I ask that you prayerfully consider what part God has for you in making this a reality.

The estimated total cost of the trip is $4,800.00.
